Can Damp Livestock Mosquito Coils Still Be Used?
Farms in humid regions often find stick coils turning soft after storage, and many farmers ask: "Can damp livestock mosquito coils still be used?" The answer: lightly damp coils that ignite normally after drying can still be used; severely damp coils that burn intermittently or emit black smoke should be discarded. Proper judgment and handling reduce waste and protect mosquito-control performance. This article covers dampness signs, moisture-proof storage, and handling tips based on MUWEISHI livestock mosquito coils. See the Farming Techniques section.
1. How to Judge Whether Livestock Coils Are Damp
Dampness shows up in both physical and burning characteristics. Use these quick checks:
- Soft feel: A dry stick coil is rigid and straight; a damp one loses stiffness, bends easily, and feels clammy in hand
- Darker color, water stains, or mold spots: Severely damp coils show uneven color with white or gray-black mold patches
- Heavier weight: For the same count, damp coils are noticeably heavier than dry ones
- Ignition test: Damp coils burn unsteadily, self-extinguish, produce black smoke and a harsh odor, and release active ingredients poorly
| Damp Level | Appearance | Burning Performance | Handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Slightly soft, no obvious stains | Ignites, burns stably | Dry and reuse |
| Moderate | Darker color, local water stains | Intermittent burn, darker smoke | Dry, test-burn; discard if poor |
| Severe | Mold spots, badly softened | Hard to ignite, frequent extinguishing, black smoke | Discard directly |
2. Handling Tips After Coils Get Damp
Don't throw out damp coils immediately. Follow these steps:
- Sort out damp sticks: Empty the carton, inspect each stick, set aside damp ones; unaffected sticks can be used normally
- Air-dry in a cool, ventilated place: Lay damp sticks flat in a cool, ventilated area (avoid direct sun, which causes deformation and cracking), turn once or twice, dry for 24-48 hours
- Test-burn to verify: Ignite 1-2 sticks and check whether burning is stable and smoke-free; stable burning means reuse is fine, while intermittent burning or black smoke means discard
- Prioritize low-density areas: Dried coils lose some active ingredient, so use them in low-mosquito-density nursing boxes or temporary spaces, paired with the 45cm short stick for small areas
Note: Severely damp coils lose most of their active ingredient (e.g., pyrethroids) even after drying. Forcing use not only gives poor results but may produce irritating smoke from incomplete combustion. See the Standard Stick Coil product page.
3. Moisture-Proof Storage Methods
Prevention matters more than handling. Seal after opening to prevent moisture is a key rule in MUWEISHI's coil instructions. Practical tips:
- Carton storage: Unopened cartons stay in their original box on shelves 30cm above the floor to avoid ground moisture
- Seal after opening: After taking coils from an opened carton, immediately reseal the rest in a plastic bag or airtight bucket, squeezing out excess air
- Storage environment: Choose a cool, dry, ventilated warehouse with relative humidity below 60%, away from water sources, drains, and wash zones
- First-in, first-out: Use coils in the order of purchase to avoid long inventory backlog and moisture pickup
- Avoid storing with odorous chemicals: Prevent odor transfer that affects use
The 1.2m long stick comes 400 pieces per carton. Open in batches, use as needed, and finish within 1-2 months of opening. The 45cm short stick is configured on demand and should also be sealed after opening.
4. Details That Reduce Moisture Loss
- Incoming inspection: Check whether the outer carton is damp or deformed on delivery; reject or flag deformed cartons for priority use
- Transport protection: Cover with tarpaulin during rainy-season transport to prevent rain wetting the carton
- Warehouse dehumidification: Use dehumidifiers or quicklime packs in southern plum-rain season to keep the warehouse dry
- Use-end protection: Place the coil on dry ground after lighting; avoid damp mud or freshly washed pen floors

Judging and handling damp livestock coils is not complicated. The key is "prevention first, dry light dampness, discard severe dampness." The habit of "seal immediately after opening, store off the floor and dry" sharply cuts moisture loss. To learn about storage requirements for the Strong Stick or Aiye Stick, contact us.
