Rainy Season Livestock Farm Mosquito Control: Keeping Effectiveness in High Humidity

In southern China, the rainy season from April to September brings continuous wet weather, ground moisture, and humidity often above 80%. Livestock farms face a triple challenge: more mosquitoes, harder-to-light coils, and faster smoke dispersion. How do you maintain mosquito control during the rainy season? The answer is a four-pronged approach: moisture-proof storage + dry-surface lighting + multi-point placement + environmental management. This guide draws on MUWEISHI product characteristics and real-world farm experience.

1. Why Rainy Season Mosquito Control is Harder

Multiple adverse factors compound during the wet season:

  • High humidity causes coils to absorb moisture: When relative humidity exceeds 80%, opened coils can become damp within 2-3 days, making them hard to light or causing them to go out
  • Wet ground prevents direct placement: Puddles and mud in pens during rainy periods mean coils placed directly on the ground quickly extinguish
  • Rain and wind disperse smoke rapidly: In open or semi-open pens, wind and rain drastically reduce smoke coverage per coil
  • Standing water breeds mosquitoes: Puddles, blocked drains, and discarded containers become breeding sites, significantly increasing mosquito density around pens

2. Moisture-Proof Storage for Rainy Season

Coil dampness is the #1 cause of failed mosquito control in the wet season:

  1. Keep cartons sealed: Unopened cartons should remain in original packaging, stored on shelves at least 30 cm off the ground
  2. Seal immediately after opening: After removing coils, immediately reseal the package in plastic bags or airtight containers
  3. Batch into smaller packs: Pre-pack 3-5 days' worth in small sealed bags to reduce repeated opening of bulk packaging
  4. Dehumidify storage: Use dehumidifiers or quicklime packs in storage; keep relative humidity below 60%
  5. First in, first out: Use older stock first to prevent prolonged storage dampness

Mildly damp coils can be dried and reused; heavily damp coils with mold or severe softening should be discarded. See our coil storage guide.

3. Lighting and Placement in Wet Conditions

3.1 Lighting Techniques

  • Use a dry ignition source: Light the coil tip with a lighter or torch for 5-8 seconds, ensuring full flame before blowing out
  • Tilt when lighting: Angle the coil tip slightly downward so the flame rises through the tip for thorough ignition
  • Pre-dry before use: Lay out coils in a dry, ventilated spot for 1-2 hours before lighting

3.2 Placement Strategies

  • Use a dry base: Place a dry wooden board, brick, or tray under the coil to keep it off wet ground
  • Suspend coils: Hang coils from posts or beams using wire or hooks, 30-50 cm above ground — this prevents moisture contact and improves smoke dispersion (keep ≥1 m from flammables)
  • Increase density: In rainy conditions, effective coverage per coil drops 30-50%. With 1.2 m long coils, place one per 40-50 m² instead of the usual 60-80 m²
  • Place downwind: Position coils on the leeward side of pens to prevent wind and rain from dispersing smoke

4. Integrated Rainy Season Mosquito Prevention

Coils alone are not enough — combine with environmental management:

  • Eliminate standing water: After rain, promptly clear puddles, empty containers, and unblock drains around pens. This is the single most effective rainy season measure
  • Ensure drainage: Keep pen drainage ditches clear and flowing
  • Clear surrounding weeds: Regularly trim weeds around pens to reduce mosquito habitat
  • Install screening: Add insect screens to enclosed pen windows and doors; hang netting on the windward side of open pens
  • Time lighting correctly: Light coils at 17:00-19:00, the pre-peak mosquito activity window, for maximum effectiveness

5. Recommended Products for Rainy Season

  • Strong + 1.2 m long: High-density mosquitoes in heat and humidity call for the strong formula with all-night long-stick coverage — the go-to rainy season combo
  • 45 cm short for spot treatment: Place additional short coils near damp corners and drainage areas for targeted reinforcement
  • Wormwood for sensitive areas: Sow houses and nursery pens with poor airflow and high humidity benefit from the mild wormwood formula

The key to rainy season mosquito control isn't "more coils" — it's "coils that light, burn steadily, and disperse well." With proper storage, adjusted placement, and environmental management, farms can maintain effective mosquito control even through continuous wet weather. Contact us with any questions.
